Who is the qualification for?
All workers in a port environment.
The qualification would be suitable for those seeking recognition of their competence in one or more of a wide variety of port operations related activities including general port operations, stevedoring, marine operations, passenger operations, supervision and team leading.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no entry requirements or age restrictions for this qualification. It is open to any candidate who has the potential to meet the requirements of assessment.
How is the course assessed?
The qualification is competence based. This means that it is linked to the candidate's ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with their work. Candidates plan a program of development and assessment with their tutor and compile a portfolio of evidence to prove they are competent and knowledgeable in their work role.
The learner will be assessed in their work place through naturally occurring work activity, observations, personal statements, reflective logs, witness testimony and a demonstration of underpinning knowledge and understanding of the principle concepts.
The candidate needs to complete the required number of compulsory assessment routes plus then a number of assessment routes from their choice of pathway.
Pathways: general port operations, stevedoring, marine operations, passenger operations, supervision and team leading.
How does this qualification improve my career prospects?
This qualification will form a major component of Port Skills and Safety (PSS). Apprenticeship framework and allow progression to higher levels. E.g. Level 3 Supervision of Port Operations NVQ, VRQs and a variety of Marine NVQs and VRQs.
The Port Operations NVQ benefits both employers and employees by offering alternative pathways and choice within pathways to suit all needs.

The qualification is suitable for people who carry out a range of activities, within the distribution sector. Experienced order clerks and pickers and/or warehouse operatives. The course explores the safe and efficient receipt, movement, storage, handling and dispatch of goods in a warehousing and logistics environment. Candidates should have a degree of autonomy and be required to make decisions within agreed boundaries and limits.
What are the entry requirements?
The course is designed to reflect the work of candidates working within a distribution, warehousing and storage environment. It is appropriate for candidates who are competent in basic skills and require recognition for a wider range of abilities within the distribution, warehousing and storage sector and who undertake varied warehousing, storage and logistics activities.

To achieve the full award, candidates must complete eight units, including three mandatory units and five optional units:
